BMX Helmets Mandated for BMX Competitors

Posted on August 13, 2014 by Barbara Stevenson | 0 Comments

BMX MOMS BEWARE! Last year, action-sports event organizers mandated that helmets comply with the US CPSC bicycle standards for BMX competitors. Sadly, it took a tragedy to make this change come about. The prior year, Brett "Mad Dog" Banasiewicz crashed while wearing a skateboard helmet during a BMX competition resulting in a coma and traumatic brain injury. (Thankfully, after a LOT of hard work, he's okay.)

As a result, the Athlete Recovery Fund, X Games, Dew Tour, and the ASA Action Sports World Tour all partnered to bring about this important rule change. Not all helmets marketed as skateboard helmets (or that have a "skate style") meet US CPSC bicycle helmet safety standards. Watch the video clip below, (produced by Bell Helmets and featuring the Bell Segment bicycle helmet), to understand the importance of wearing a US CSPC approved bicycle helmet while riding bmx bikes.

I hope you'll mandate helmet use with your kids, too. XSPKids has a wide selection of kid-pleasing, US CPSC approved BMX helmets. If your little guy or gal is aggressive in the vert parks, please consider a youth full face helmet for added protection. (Plus, they look super cool!)
